Journal Entry:
What types of bonds are found in DNA? What gives DNA it's unique shape and allows it to condense for cell division?
Learning Intentions
We will learn how the central dogma of biology explains genetic information flows from a sequence of nucleotides in a gene to a sequence of amino acids in a protein to create all living organisms.
We will learn the different step of protein synthesis.
We will learn how the sequence of the RNA bases, together with the structure of the RNA molecule, determines RNA function, including mRNA (carries information from the DNA to the ribosome), tRNA (molecules bind specific amino acids and allow information in the mRNA to be translated to a linear peptide sequence), rRNA (molecules are functional building blocks of ribosomes).
Closing Task:
You can recognize how problems arise in DNA replication and how they can be fixed.
Content Standards being covered:
Topics:
IST-1.L Describe the characteristics of DNA that allow it to be used as the
hereditary material.
IST-1.M Describe the mechanisms by which genetic information is copied for
transmission between generations.
IST-1.N Describe the mechanisms by which genetic information flows from DNA to
RNA to protein.
Science Practices:
2.B.b Explain relationship between different characteristics of biological
concepts, processes, or models represented visually in applied contexts.
