What is the Second Law of Thermodynamics? How does our body which is very highly organized not violate the law?
Learning Intentions
You can describe the second law of thermodynamics and explain how living systems support the law by coupling cellular processes.
You can describe metabolism and analyze the role anabolic and catabolic reactions have in metabolism.
You can compare anabolic and catabolic chemical reactions.
You can compare the various ways different organisms capture free energy and evaluate which process groups of organisms use.
Closing Task:
You can create a concept map representing how organisms capture energy
You can create an anabolic and catabolic comparison chart.
Content Standards being covered:
Big Idea 2
2.1 The student is able to explain how biological system use free energy input
to maintain organization, to grow, and to reproduce.
2.2 The student is able to justify a scientific claim that free energy is
required for living systems to maintain organization, to grow or to reproduce
but that multiple strategies for obtaining and using energy exist in different
living systems.
2.3 The student is able to predict how changes in free energy availability
affect organisms, populations, and/or ecosystems.
2.4 The student is able to use representations to pose scientific questions
about what mechanisms and structural features allow organisms to capture, store
and use free energy.
Habits of Mind/Life skills being covered:
Applying past knowledge to new situations.
