Journal Entry:
What types of Spectroscopy have we learn about already this year?
Learning Intentions
We will learn what Spectroscopy is, what the difference types are and how they are measures.
We will learn what absorbance and transmittance is and what scientific equipment you can use to measure these to determine concentration of an unknown.
We will learn how to create a calibration curve using a number of dilution of a stock solution, determining the transmittance for each dilution and graphing the data to find a relationship between the two.
We will learn how to interpret the results of an experiment regarding the absorption and transmittance of light to determine the concentration of an absorbing species in a solution.
Closing Task:
You can explain the relationship between a region of the electromagnetic spectrum and the types of molecular or electronic transitions associated with that region.
You can explain how the amount of light absorbed by a solution of molecules or ions relates to the concentration, path length and molar absorptivity.
