Journal Entry:
What defines an acid and a base?
Learning Intentions
You will learn what amphoteric means and why it is important in aqueous neutralization reactions.
You will learn the Bronsted-Lowry definitions of an acid and base and be able to identify the conjugate acids-base pairs in a neutralization reaction.
You will learn how to distinguish between a strong and weak acid using properties of the solutions.
Closing Task:
You can identify acid-base conjugate pairs and write both molecular and net ionic equations.
Content Standards being covered:
LO 3.7 Student is able to identify compounds as Bronsted-Lowry acids, bases and/or conjugate acid-base pairs, using proton transfer reactions to justify the identification.
In a neutralization reaction, protons are transferred from an acid to a base. (EK 3.B.2)
