Journal Entry:
What is the order of sublevel filling for electron configurations?
Learning Intentions
You will learn how to determine and write out the electron configurations for an atom of a particular element.
You will be able to use an element's position on the periodic table to determine the electron configuration for an atom using the Aufbau principle.
You will be able to explain exceptions to the Aufbau principle.
You recognize that electrons in atoms have an intrinsic property known as spin that can result in atomic having a magnetic moment. They, therefore, understand that only two electrons can be in any orbital and that these two electrons have to have opposite spins.
Content Standards being covered:
The currently accepted best model of the atom is based on the quantum mechanical model. (EK 1.C.2)
The interaction of electromagnetic waves or light with matter is a powerful means to probe the structure of atoms and molecules and to measure their concentration. (EK 1.D.3)
The electronic structure of the atom can be described using an electron configuration that reflects the concept of electrons in quantized energy levels or shells, the energetics of the electron in the atom can be understood by consideration of Coulomb's law (EK 1.B.2)
Many properties of atoms exhibit periodic trends that are reflective of the periodicity of electronic structure (EK 1.C.1)
