Journal Entry:
What is a hybrid? How do you think hybrids might apply to chemical bonding?
Learning Intentions
You will learn what the VSEPR Theory is and how it influences geometry and shape of molecules.
You will learn how to determine shape of a molecule based on its Lewis structure.
You will learn how to determine electron domains on a molecule to identify electron geometry, molecular geometry, bond angles and polarity.
You will learn what hybridization is and how it applies to bonding in a molecule.
Closing Task:
You can identify the hybridization of a molecular compound or ion from the formula.
Content Standards being covered:
The localized electron bonding model describes and predicts molecular geometry using Lewis diagrams and the VSEPR model. (EK 2.C.4)
Students are able to use Lewis diagrams and VSEPR to predict the geometry of molecules, identify hybridization and make predictions about polarity. (LO 2.21)
