Journal Entry:
How is the periodic table organized? What other ways could you organize it?
Learning Intentions
You will explore properties of elements form the periodic table to discover trends and patterns.
You will begin to explore the trends for atomic properties such as electron configuration and dot diagrams.
You will learn how to create Lewis dot diagrams for each atom based on its electron configuration.
You will learn what the trend is for Lewis dot diagrams on the periodic table.
You will learn the definitions of a number of atomic properties such as ionization energy, atomic and ionic radius, electronegativity, typical ionic charges, melting and boiling points, and reactivity.
Closing Task:
You can identify the primary elemental properties that form trends on the periodic table and describe those trends.
Content Standards being covered:
Many properties of atoms exhibit periodic trends that are reflective of the periodicity of electronic structure (EK 1.C.1)
