Skates are one of the most underrated animals among the cartilaginous fishes, often overshadowed by their flashier cousins– rays and sharks. When the skeletal structures of elasmobranchs become sufficiently calcified, they can resemble bone, and have similar strength characteristics to bone, without the added weight.
