Learning Intentions
You can describe what a physical property of a substance is, can compare and contrast between intensive and extensive physical properties and evaluate whether a property is a physical intensive property or a physical extensive property.
You compare and contrast physical and chemical changes, and evaluate whether a change is physical or chemical using evidence.
Content Standards being covered:
Students can identify types and phases of matter, physical and chemical
properties of matter, various changes in matter and how those changes occur.
35. Physical properties are characteristics of matter that are observable and
measurable that describe the physical state of the matter
36. Chemical properties are characteristics that describe the possible chemical
changes of matter and can only be determined when substance becomes something
new
37. Extensive physical properties are characteristics that depend on the size or
amount of the matter
38. Intensive physical properties are characteristics that do not depend on the
size of the matter- they remain constant regardless of size and can be used to
identify the substance
49. A physical change is when the structure of a substance changes but not the
identity. Intermolecular forces are modified.
50. A chemical change is the structure of a substance changes in such a way that
the identity also changes. Intramolecular forces are modified.
