Learning Intentions

Content Standards being covered:

Student can identify metric units for common measurements used in Chemistry and accurately makes conversions using metric system.
20. All units for science follow the SI system (International System of Units) The SI unit for energy is Joules (J), pressure is Pascal (Pa) or atmosphere (atm), temperature is degrees Celsius (○C) or Kelvin (K), mass is grams (g), volume is (mL), distance is meters (m)
21.The metric system is used in scientific data and includes the following prefixes- Kilo- (10^3), Hecto- (10^2), Deca- (10^1), base unit (1), deci- (10^-1), centi- (10^-2), milli- (10^-3) micro- (10^-6) and nano (10^-9)
22. The prefix symbols are Kilo- (k), Hecto- (h), Deca- (D), deci- (d), centi- (c), milli- (m), micro (µ), and nano (n)
23. In scientific notation, large numbers have a power of 10 with a positive superscript and smaller numbers (decimals) have a power of 10 with negative superscripts.
24. Conversions are set up using dimensional analysis or factor label method where conversion factors are set up to cancel units until desired unit is achieved.

Student can make and record measurements effectively using measuring tools and then apply that data appropriately in calculations.
25. a) Make measurement with appropriate scientific tool.
25. b) Record measurement with appropriate unit.
