You can observe properties of a substance before and after a change takes place and evaluate whether the change is physical or chemical using evidence.

35. Physical properties are characteristics of matter that are observable and
measurable that describe the physical state of the matter
36. Chemical properties are characteristics that describe the possible chemical
changes of matter and can only be determined when substance becomes something
new
49. A physical change is when the structure of a substance changes but not the
identity. Intermolecular forces are modified.
50. A chemical change is the structure of a substance changes in such a way that
the identity also changes. Intramolecular forces are modified.
