Learning Intentions
You can explain the importance of significant figures and their relationship to precision of measurement and calculations.
You can use the rules for determining significant figures in a measurements as well as given numbers and apply them to solve both addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems using measured data.
Content Standards being covered:
*Student can make and
record measurements effectively using measuring tools and then apply that data
appropriately in calculations.
26. In determining significant figures of a number, a
figure (number) is always significant if it is a unit other than zero
27. A zero is always significant if it is sandwiched between non-zero digits
28. A zero is significant if it is at the end of a number and on the right side
of a decimal point
29. When adding and subtracting, count the number of significant figures only on
the right side of the decimal to determine proper number to include in answer.
30. When multiplying and dividing, count the total number of significant figures
in each number to determine proper significant figures to include in answer.
