Journal Entry:
Chemists have found that metal atoms transfer electrons to non metal atoms when they form compounds. Examine the shell model showing how lithium atom might transfer an electron to a fluorine atom. What effect does this electron transfer have on the charge of each atom? Explain. What element electron arrangement does each atom resemble after the electron has been transferred?
Learning Intentions
We will learn the patterns in the periodic table associated with electron arrangements.
We will learn what an ion is
We will learn the relationship between an ion charge, valence electrons, and an atom's placement on the periodic table.
Closing Task:
You can determine what happens to a specific element when it becomes an ion, the type of ion it becomes and its charge based on its location o the periodic table.
Content Standards being covered:
Students understand the structure of matter at the atomic level and the history that lead to our current understanding.
