Learning Intentions
You can observe and describe trends created on the periodic table based on elements properties.
You can define the two main factors that influence the trends on the periodic table: nuclear charge and shielding effect.
You can interpret a graph of the trend in atomic radius for elements on the periodic table and be able to explain the trend.
You can create model for particular trend using straws/stick and Styrofoam.
Content Standards being covered:
HS-PS1-1. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.Student understands how the periodic table is organized, how that organization can be used to determine an elements properties and trends of properties on the periodic table.
98. An atom’s Atomic Radius increases from right to left across the periods and down the groups
99. Most trends of properties on the periodic table are influenced by nuclear charge (number of protons) and electron shielding.
