Learning Intentions
You can define a mole and used it to count particles.
You can do calculations between mole, mass and number of particles of a substance.
You can use a method of problem solving using units to convert from one quantity to another, called dimensional analysis or factor labeling method.
Content Standards being covered:
Student can identify metric units for common measurements
using in Chemistry and understand how to make conversions using metric system.
23. In scientific notation, large numbers have a power of 10 with a positive
superscript and smaller numbers (decimals) have a power of 10 with negative
superscripts
24. Conversions are set up using dimensional analysis or factor label method
where conversion factors are set up to cancel units until desired unit is
acheived.
*Student understands what a mole of particles is and how the
mole is used in chemistry to determine mass of a compound.
105. The mole is a quantity used to count particles and is equal to 6.022 X
10^23 particles
106. The mass of one mole of any particle is its atomic mass in grams
107. The total mass of a compound is the sum of all of the atom’s masses that
make up the compound
Habits of Mind/Life skills being covered:
Listening with Understanding and Empathy
Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision
Journal Entry:
What is an example hypothesis for the Measuring Mass as a Means for Counting Exploration?
